How to get broadband without a landline and save you money off your monthly bill
BROADBAND speed doesn't have to come with the cost of a landline, these are your options for getting fast internet without a phone line.

Getting broadband internet doesn't mean you have to get a landline phone, even though lots of operators insist on it.

The UK plans to make it a legal requirement that everyone has at least a 10Mbps broadband connection from 2020 onwards.

Many providers, like BT, charge for a landline as it's these copper phone lines that act as the physical path along which the ADSL connected data is transmitted.

There are alternatives like Virgin Media which uses fiber optic cable to deliver high-speed broadband, minus the need for a phone line rental fee.

To get your broadband you need to take into consideration a few factors when it comes to speed before you decide.
Which broadband speed is best for me?

These break down into four basic sections: ADSL which goes up to about 17Mb, fibre-optic which hits around the 52Mb mark, superfast fiber-optic that tops out at 76Mb and finally ultrafast fiber-optic for up to 350Mb and a new generation that goes up to a whopping 1Gb connection speed.

The last three are the only options for avoiding a phone line but are generally more expensive.

To put those options into perspective, Netflix recommends a 20Mb connection if you want to stream 4K and HDR video.
Which is the best broadband without line rental?

Despite there being multiple fiber broadband options in the UK, there is currently only one service that offers the connection without a landline and that's Virgin Media.

If your area is eligible then you can have a cable run to your property for high speeds of up to 350Mbps.

While Virgin Media may try to sell you its phone and TV package there is an option to simply get connected to broadband alone.

Virgin Media's top-end 350 fiber broadband deal will cost you £42 per month on a 12-month contract then £48 per month on a 12-month contract after that with a £20 setup fee. This means you don’t need a phone line installed at all.

If that’s a bit pricey you could opt for the 200Mb option for £37 per month for 12 months then £43 per month for 12 months after, again with a £20 setup fee and no phone line.
What other phone line free options are there in the UK?

Another way to get broadband speeds without a landline connection is to go for a 4G mobile broadband connection.

These often come with Wi-Fi routers so that you can connect at home without knowing the difference between that and a wired connection.

This also offers the option of a mobile Wi-Fi unit which allows you to take your connection anywhere with you.

The downside here is that you'll need to be in an area of good 4G connectivity and may have to spend a bit more for unlimited data access.

Options here vary from EE, Three, Vodafone and O2 all offering mobile broadband – best coverage and therefore speeds may be the deciding factor here.

EE offers some of the best coverage, speeds, and deals. The EE 4GEE Home Router is £35 per month with no upfront costs on an 18-month contract, 4GEE speeds, and a 50GB data limit.
